Among the most celebrated practitioners of Austrian Baroque architecture, Hildebrandt was born in Genoa. Beginning his career as a military engineer, he entered imperial service in 1701. His greatest works, such as the Belvedere Palace (1721–1723) in Vienna, which he designed for Prince Eugene of Savoy, and the cloister of Göttweig in Lower Austria, are characterized by highly imaginative central staircases. These buildings were also placed in comparatively rural settings—Belvedere was beyond the city walls of Vienna at the time—allowing Hildebrandt to exploit the massive proportions and dynamic lines of his exteriors to great effect. These he further enhanced with spacious formal gardens. Other significant Hildebrandt structures in Vienna are the Daun-Kinsky (1713–1716) and Schönborn (1706–1711) palaces.
